This cross stitch design is adapted from the painting "The Year of the Dragon" by Stephanie Pui-Mun Law.

This is a very big design. It will take a lot of time and patience. While it is charted like all my other designs, for any stitch count, I highly recommend stitching this one on a tighter count fabric such as a 25-count evenweave with a single strand of floss. This will help keep the size under control and let the details flow together beautifully so you finish up with a true work of art.

If the size is a little daunting but the design still appeals, simply print the chart and use a ruler to create your own outer edges. Focussing tightly on the figures and leaving out the extra background still makes a lovely design and cuts down on the size and amount of stitching.

She has often been photographed with ethereal items such as crystal balls, and out of this, along with my love for her music, persona and voice, grew an idea.... As an artist, I am influenced by John William Waterhouse, who, as we know, also had a preference for mystical themes throughout his work, taking myth and magic and visualizing this in his own way. His painting Crystal Ball, seemed a perfect image to connect Stevie to, and thus this painting was born.

This entire design has not been stitched, but the sample to the right gives an indication of how it will turn out when completed.

Eagle nebula
Hubble Space Telescope
165x162; 100 colours
$10USD
This design is charted from the image STScI-1995-44 taken by the Hubble Space Telescope. It is used in the public domain in accordance with STScI's contract with NASA.

Embryonic Stars Emerge from Interstellar "Eggs"

Eerie, dramatic new pictures from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope show newborn stars emerging from "eggs" - not the barnyard variety - but rather dense, compact pockets of interstellar gas called evaporating gaseous globules (EGGs). Hubble found the "EGGs," appropriately enough, in the Eagle nebula, a nearby star-forming region 6,500 light- years away in the constellation Serpens.

"For a long time astronomers have speculated about what processes control the sizes of stars - about why stars are the sizes that they are," said Jeff Hester of Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ. "Now in M16 we seem to be watching at least one such process at work right in front of our eyes."

Striking pictures taken by Hester and co-investigators with Hubble's Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) resolve the EGGs at the tip of finger-like features protruding from monstrous columns of cold gas and dust in the Eagle nebula (also called M16 - 16th object in the Messier catalog). The columns - dubbed "elephant trunks" - protrude from the wall of a vast cloud of molecular hydrogen, like stalagmites rising above the floor of a cavern. Inside the gaseous towers, which are light-years long, the interstellar gas is dense enough to collapse under its own weight, forming young stars that continue to grow as they accumulate more and more mass from their surroundings.

Hubble gives a clear look at what happens as a torrent of ultraviolet light from nearby young, hot stars heats the gas along the surface of the pillars, "boiling it away" into interstellar space - a process called "photoevaporation. "The Hubble pictures show photoevaporating gas as ghostly streamers flowing away from the columns. But not all of the gas boils off at the same rate. The EGGs, which are denser than their surroundings, are left behind after the gas around them is gone.

"It's a bit like a wind storm in the desert," said Hester. "As the wind blows away the lighter sand, heavier rocks buried in the sand are uncovered. But in M16, instead of rocks, the ultraviolet light is uncovering the denser egg-like globules of gas that surround stars that were forming inside the gigantic gas columns."

Some EGGs appear as nothing but tiny bumps on the surface of the columns. Others have been uncovered more completely, and now resemble "fingers" of gas protruding from the larger cloud. (The fingers are gas that has been protected from photoevaporation by the shadows of the EGGs). Some EGGs have pinched off completely from the larger column from which they emerged, and now look like teardrops in space.

By stringing together these pictures of EGGs caught at different stages of being uncovered, Hester and his colleagues from the Wide Field and Planetary Camera Investigation Definition Team are getting an unprecedented look at what stars and their surroundings look like before they are truly stars.

"This is the first time that we have actually seen the process of forming stars being uncovered by photoevaporation," Hester emphasized. "In some ways it seems more like archaeology than astronomy. The ultraviolet light from nearby stars does the digging for us, and we study what is unearthed."

"In a few cases we can see the stars in the EGGs directly in the WFPC2 images," says Hester. "As soon as the star in an EGG is exposed, the object looks something like an ice cream cone, with a newly uncovered star playing the role of the cherry on top."

Ultimately, photoevaporation inhibits the further growth of the embyronic stars by dispersing the cloud of gas they were "feeding" from. "We believe that the stars in M16 were continuing to grow as more and more gas fell onto them, right up until the moment that they were cut off from that surrounding material by photoevaporation," said Hester.

This process is markedly different from the process that governs the sizes of stars forming in isolation. Some astronomers believe that, left to its own devices, a star will continue to grow until it nears the point where nuclear fusion begins in its interior. When this happens, the star begins to blow a strong "wind" that clears away the residual material. Hubble has imaged this process in detail in so-called Herbig-Haro objects.

Hester also speculated that photoevaporation might actually inhibit the formation of planets around such stars. It is not at all clear from the new data that the stars in M16 have reached the point where they have formed the disks that go on to become solar systems," said Hester, "and if these disks haven't formed yet, they never will."

Hester plans to use Hubble's high resolution to probe other nearby star-forming regions to look for similar structures. "Discoveries about the nature of the M16 EGGs might lead astronomers to rethink some of their ideas about the environments of stars forming in other regions, such as the Orion Nebula," he predicted.

Release Date: 12:00AM (EST) November 2, 1995
Release Number: STScI-1995-44

Credit: NASA, ESA, STScI, J.

Light Echo
Hubble Space Telescope
135x148; 97 colours
$10USD
This design is charted from the image STScI-PRC2004-10 taken by the Hubble Space Telescope. It is used in the public domain in accordance with STScI's contract with NASA.

The model was stitched on 32-count Confederate Grey Belfast linen by Jeannie-Maree Becker of Tasmania, Australia. The design is suitable for aida, evenweave or linen.

"Starry Night," Vincent van Gogh's famous painting, is renowned for its bold whorls of light sweeping across a raging night sky. Although this image of the heavens came only from the artist's restless imagination, a new picture from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope bears remarkable similarities to the van Gogh work, complete with never-before-seen spirals of dust swirling across trillions of miles of interstellar space.

This image, obtained with the Advanced Camera for Surveys on February 8, 2004, is Hubble's latest view of an expanding halo of light around a distant star, named V838 Monocerotis (V838 Mon). The illumination of interstellar dust comes from the red supergiant star at the middle of the image, which gave off a flashbulb-like pulse of light two years ago. V838 Mon is located about 20,000 light-years away from Earth in the direction of the constellation Monoceros, placing the star at the outer edge of our Milky Way galaxy.

Called a light echo, the expanding illumination of a dusty cloud around the star has been revealing remarkable structures ever since the star suddenly brightened for several weeks in early 2002. Though Hubble has followed the light echo in several snapshots, this new image shows swirls or eddies in the dusty cloud for the first time. These eddies are probably caused by turbulence in the dust and gas around the star as they slowly expand away. The dust and gas were likely ejected from the star in a previous explosion, similar to the 2002 event, which occurred some tens of thousands of years ago. The surrounding dust remained invisible and unsuspected until suddenly illuminated by the brilliant explosion of the central star two years ago.

The Hubble telescope has imaged V838 Mon and its light echo several times since the star's outburst in January 2002, in order to follow the constantly changing appearance of the dust as the pulse of illumination continues to expand away from the star at the speed of light. During the outburst event, the normally faint star suddenly brightened, becoming 600,000 times more luminous than our Sun. It was thus one of the brightest stars in the entire Milky Way, until it faded away again in April 2002. The star has some similarities to a class of objects called "novae," which suddenly increase in brightness due to thermonuclear explosions at their surfaces; however, the detailed behavior of V838 Mon, in particular its extremely red color, has been completely different from any previously known nova.

Nature's own piece of performance art, this structure will continue to change its appearance in coming years as the light from the stellar outburst continues to propagate outward and bounce off more distant black clouds of dust. Astronomers expect the echoes to remain visible for at least the rest of the current decade.

Credit: NASA and The Hubble Heritage Team (AURA/STScI)

When Enid and Geraint marry, the hero, delighting in married bliss, forgets his knightly duties. In the Welsh tale, Enid laments that she is the cause of her husband's dishonor. Geraint, hearing only the last part of her lament in which she fears she is not a true wife because of the shame their marriage has brought to his knightly reputation, believes his wife to have been unfaithful, and takes her with him on a quest in which he proves his prowess and she her fidelity.

The Lady who has three birds, one white, one emerald and one golden, who, when you are in pain or need, sing you to sleep and heal you in your sleep. And when you wake up, you are okay, your pain in gone... Rhiannon rides a white mare, who runs faster than any mortal horse, and lived through a sad love story with a mortal Prince, for whom she eventually gave up immortality. I first ran into Rhiannon through the wonderful song about Her by Stevie Nicks. Stevie is a major influence in my life to this day, and I owe a lot of inspiration to her words and voice.

If you have read "The Mists Of Avalon" by Marion Bradley, you will know that the Summer Sea surrounded the Isle of Avalon, and that naturally swans glided majestically across these waters. This depiction of Morgan Le Fay really shows her challenge, being a priestess, being tested by the Goddess time and time again. The dialogue we see is that with her Goddess, holding Excalibur by her side, the symbol of King Arthur, her brother. The balance between the Old Ways of the pre-Christian pagan belief slowly disappearing into the Mists, Morgan half turned to the Moon, half turned towards us with Excalibur... not only the symbol of Arthur but also of Christianity taking over from the Old Ones.... The conflict and pain of changing lives and beliefs.

The model was stitched using 1 strand of floss over two threads by Marylyn Cooke of Nelson, New Zealand.

Cats were in my cradle when I was a baby, I was brought upwith them and they have been around me for most of my life so far. Therefore when I chose to create art, I of coursehad to include them in all forms. This big cat is a Clouded Leopard, or Neofilis. In Dutch the name for this big cat is"Nevelpanter" which freely translates into "Misty Panther", and the Latin for Mist is Nebula, which I found to be amost appropriate name for this piece of us and them in unity... Nebula comes close to our word Nevel, and I love thesound of it. Just had to create a visual around this word. Somehow the lady in the piece turned out to be NativeAmerican, and I don't know why. She just wanted to be there. The mystery of creating is wonderful, becausesometimes I really don't have any idea how my scribbling is gonna turn out... which ways it goes, and what it meansin the end.

Andromeda
Gustave Dore
200x302; 70 colours
$10USD
This cross stitch design is adapted from the painting "Andromeda" by Gustave Doré.

Andromeda was a Ethiopian princess in Greek mythology. Her father was Cepheus king of Ethiopia. His wife and her mother was Cassiopeia. Queen Cassiopeis boosted that Andromeda was more beautiful than the Nereids, who were sea goddesses. The Nereids were very angry and asked their father Nereus to send the sea monster Cetus to attack the Ethiopian coasts. To appease the deities, an Oracle directed Cepheus to chain his daughter to the side of a rock on the sea coast as a sacrifice to be the only person to be devoured by the sea monster. Persues, the son of the chief god Zeus and the mortal Danaë, killed the Gordon Medusa by using the shield of Athene as a mirror to locate the Gordon Medusa by the Medusa's mirror image. Any living being looking at a Medusa will be turn into stone, but the reflection of a Medusa is will not turn the viewer to stone. After locating the Gordon Medusa, Perseus severed her head with his sword. The winged horse Pegasus sprang from Medusa's blood. While flying with Hermes winged shoes on his feet over Ethiopia, Perseus saw Andromeda chained to a rock and the approaching sea monster. Perseus rescued Andromeda by turning the sea monster to stone with the head of Gordon Medusa. After killing the monster, Perseus married Andromeda.

Andromeda was changed into constellation after her death. Andromeda is the only constellation in the northern hemisphere with a spiral nebula visible to the unaided eye.

The model was stitched by Judith Barsanti of Palmerston North, New Zealand.

One of the highlights of the holiday was a day out on a cruise boat, exploring the Bay of Islands. The brochure promised we would get to see dolphins during the course of the day - and if we were lucky, get to swim with them. We missed out on the swimming as the pod we found had juveniles with it, but we certainly got to see the dolphins. It was wonderful.

I took lots of photos - many of them are mostly flat sea with a little splash where the dolphin has just disappeared, but this was my best one. I hope you enjoy stitching these dolphins as much as I loved getting to see them in their own habitat.

Being a cat-lover, my mother set herself up to take a photograph and the cat obliged her by stretching, just as she took the picture. I have left in the roof of the next house and the town in the background as I think they add to the feel of the image, but don't be afraid, it isn't a difficult pattern to stitch - all that is required is a little patience.

Corrections were made to this pattern on 18 February, 2005. This is my second "twilight" pattern and is a companion to One Tree Hill.

There are two copies of the chart included with this pattern. One includes the sky background in twilight colours. The chart shows it fully cross stitched, but it is completely up to you. It can be stitched with full cross stitches using two strands of floss to match the tree and memorial. For a lighter effect, try a full cross using only one strand or a half cross using two strands. Your choice.

If you don't want to stitch the background at all, the second chart shows only the tree and the memorial. I would recommend stitching it on a darker fabric, perhaps blue or grey (my personal favourite is Confederate Grey) to let the shapes blend into the background.
