John Wiliiam Waterhouse
A scene from The Tempest - Miranda watches as the ship founders in the storm. |
Watherhouse's well known painting of The Lady of Shallot, floating down the river towards Camelot and death. |
British artist, 1849-1917. Painter of classical, historical, and literary subjects. His early works were of classical themes in the spirit of Alma-Tadema and Frederic Leighton. His painting 'The Lady of Shalott' particularly reveals Waterhouse's interest in themes associated with the Pre-Raphaelites, particularly tragic or powerful femmes fatales.
